Warts are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop when your skin becomes infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV causes excess cells and keratin that toughen the skin and produce the hard, rough bump known as a wart. Warts are most commonly found on the hands and feet, but they can develop on any area of the body.
In most people, 50 percent of all warts spontaneously go away within 12 to 18 months. However, warts are commonly bothersome to most people, and there are cases where wart treatment is beneficial.
It is important to avoid attempting to treat a wart at home, as it can spread rapidly to other areas if it is not treated effectively and professionally. Most over-the-counter treatment options for common skin warts use ingredients like salicylic acid to dehydrate the wart, but this is not always effective and may take several months or even years if it does work.
After assessing your wart and listening to your concerns, our dermatologist can advise whether you would benefit from freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen or burning it with an electric needle. At your consultation, we will go over these options with you in depth.
